Nothing takes the fun out of an otherwise enjoyable ATV ride quite like getting stuck in a ditch. Once your four wheeler becomes stuck, getting it unstuck can be an arduous and lengthy process. This list of strategies from Lemond’s Olney can help make getting your ATV unstuck an easier process.

1. Use a Winch

Having a winch on hand will make getting your ATV unstuck so much easier. Attach one end of the winch to your ATV’s front or back and attach the other end to another vehicle, and pull your ATV right out! Of course, you won’t always have another ATV on hand to offer assistance. For these kinds of situations, you should pack a come-along. A come-along is a small hand-powered winch. Regardless of which winch type you pack, make sure that you have tow straps on hand to properly secure your ATV!

2. Create Your Own Anchor

If your winch isn’t hand-powered and you don’t have another vehicle on hand to help, the alternative is to create your own anchor. Any large, stationary object, such as a stump or large rock, can act as an anchor. If there’s not suitable anchors nearby, try using a set of ice-climbing anchors or a small steel rod with an eye bolt instead.

3. Bring a Shovel

If you don’t have a winch on hand, another way to get your ATV out of the muck is by digging your tires out. Move the dirt surrounding your vehicle around until you can get enough traction to escape the mud.

4. Tilt Your ATV Back and Forth

If you don’t have a winch or a shovel, rock your ATV back and forth using your body weight. Learn into the motion enough and you should be able to inch the vehicle forward until the wheels find purchase.
